Jacobin Reading Group: January, "Identity Politics" @ Bilgisaray

Our next session will take place on Wednesday, January 17th at 19:00. Meet us at Bilgisaray on Heinrichplatz in Kreuzberg, Oranienstraße 194. But! Come earlier, between 17:45 and 19:00, and fight the January blues by hanging out and cook some food with us in the venue’s kitchen!

What do people mean when they talk about “identity politics?” or “intersectionality”. We’ll look at the history of these terms, how socialists can make sense of them and their varying meanings, and how to best address political questions related to race, class, gender and sexuality.

We have 3 readings to try to get a handle on this broad and important topic:

Intersectional Identity and the Path to Progress
By Eleanor Robertson in Meanjin

How Race Is Conjured
an interview with Barbara J. Fields and Karen E. Fields in Jacobin

Identity Crisis
By Salar Mohandesi in Viewpoint

Afterwards, everyone is welcome to join us for a drink at one of the many charming bars in the vicinity (probably Südblock)
